Review: Voxx and the Hound – Another Revolution

"Time to climb atop the horse and take the reins
This adrenaline is coursing through my veins
The only medicine I need to succeed
Is a handful of heart and a pocket full of brains" - GO

Many artists are not willing to be themselves anymore, and even less are willing to sacrifice themselves to share the wisdom that inspires change in the listener. Another Revolution, the second studio album from St Louis emcee/producer duo Voxx and the Hound holds the listener accountable to the woes of our society and calls to action for people to take steps towards fixing the problems that plague our communities. Another Revolution focuses on big-picture problems like mental health, addiction, false identities, and more. The emcee of the duo, Beatty, shares the experiences of battling through tribulations himself, conceptualizing the path we must take to overcome these issues. The album also provides a solution: Revolution, one of the mind, heart, and soul, against a human condition that is perpetuated by a lack of awareness.

"Not as fast as the rabbit
so you basque in your habit
Everywhere you go, everybody you see
Gotta ask if they have it
On the path to an addict
All the math did you add it?
It looked right, if not, do you have what it takes
To get past all the madness?" - Runnin'

Another Revolution is lyrically spectacular being it a conscious hiphop album. Beatty is a student of the game who uses a technical style to depict vivid imagery about America's crumbling society, but the lyrics are not to complex to where the bars are over the listeners head. Beatty uses a combination of storytelling and personal experience to portray the decay seen in our urban and rural cultures. This album makes you think and question the paradigm of our condition, one riddled with drugs, psychosis, inauthenticity and a lack of consciousness. Beatty undoubtedly possesses one of the most unique and distinct vocal deliveries in hiphop, which helps the message resonate. Another Revolution is an 80-minute album, with no features, which says something about the lyrical prowess possessed within Beatty.

"See I'm stealthy, but I ain't healthy
Tiptoe around anything that might help me
So think twice before you try to sell me on shit, do you really care about my well-being?" - Consciousness

If the lyrical content wasn't enough to peak interest, the production value is the icing on the cake. Unkle Skock, the producer of the duo, encompasses old school boombap drums with electronic upbeat tempos and melodies. However, even with the elements of electronic dance melodies and tempos, Another Revolution has a completely organic hiphop sound. The duo's combination of unique abilities allows Another Revolution to sound different than other hiphop albums. Unkle SKock's production draws the listener in with emphatic intros and outros, sample changeups and powerful speeches that flow perfectly into the message of the album. You can find Voxx and the Hound's album Another Revolution on Spotify, iTunes, IHeartRadio, Tidal, and all streaming platforms.
